Teal, Vocelka Break 25-Pound Barrier To Win Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit Mille Lacs Lake Tournament, Presented by Ranger Boats

Isle, Minn.—June 16, 2018—Aaron Teal and Dane Vocelka overcame ever-changing weather conditions, scattered fish and a talented field of the Midwest’s top competitive bass anglers to win the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s regular season tournament on mighty Mille Lacs Lake.

The hard-fishing pair pocketed a cool $6,900 in first-place cash for their efforts. They also broke the mythical 25-pound barrier with a hefty 25-pound, 2-ounce limit of beefy Mille Lacs smallmouths, topping the weights at three previous NABC events on the central-Minnesota bass-fishing Mecca.

“It feels good to win this,” recalled Teal, of Richmond, Minnesota. “There were a lot of great anglers fishing the event, so we knew we had our work cut out for us. Plus, the weather was crazy. The wind switched three or four times, and we went from fishing in flat calm to six-foot rollers.”

“I’m feeling speechless right now,” added Vocelka, of Mound, Minnesota. “We had a tough practice. The big fish were scattered, so we ended up with 10 spots we wanted to spend time on. And the talent in the NABC field here was incredible. I’ve lost money to almost every one of these guys in different tournaments over the years, so it’s great to win this one.”

Teal and Vocelka’s winning game plan included focusing on offshore structure in 12 to 14 feet of water, mainly on the east side of the lake. Most of their bass came on dropshot rigs tipped with shad-style softbaits, but one tight-lipped weigh fish required coaxing with a light-line fly setup before biting.

Rounding out the top five teams were:

2nd: Brian Wood and Nathan Whitting, 24-12, $3,300 cash plus $3,260 from the option pot

3rd: Josh Douglas and Joel Willert, 24-04, $2,000 cash

4th: Jim Moynagh and Steve Sandberg, 23-09, $1,250 cash plus $2,172 from the option pot

5th: Matt Peters and Justin Faulk, 23-08, $1,050 cash

In all, the Cabela’s NABC awarded a total payout of $25,862 in cash and prizes.

A total of 165 bass weighing 685 pounds, 2 ounces crossed the scale at Mac’s Twin Bay Resort and were returned to the Mille Lacs system utilizing the Cabela’s NABC’s state-of-the-art catch-and-release system. Big bass was a 5-pound, 10-ounce trophy smallmouth caught by Brian Wood and Nathan Whitting.

Based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the Cabela’s NABC is open to two-person teams from all walks of life, regardless of club or sponsor affiliation. Entry fees are $500 per regular season tournament. Along with an overall payback to anglers well in excess of 100 percent, a small donation is included in each entry fee and matched by the NABC and other conservation organizations up to 3-to-1 in support of bass conservation projects anywhere the NABC does business.

The 2018 NABC season includes five events on a mix of the Midwest’s finest largemouth and smallmouth bass destinations. Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, is enjoying its eighth year as title sponsor of the NABC.
