Smallmouth Showdown June 16

Ponca City, Okla.—June 6, 2018—After an exciting season opener on Wisconsin’s fabled Sturgeon Bay in May, the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit heads for another world-class smallmouth bass fishing destination—Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake.

Two-person teams from across the Midwest will converge on Mille Lacs June 16 to compete for thousands in cash and prizes in a regular season Cabela’s NABC tournament headquartered at Mac’s Twin Bay Resort just north of Isle.

“Everyone’s excited to see what kind of weights the teams put up on Mille Lacs this season,” said Cabela’s NABC Tournament Director Jack Baker. “In 2017, Shane and Mason Raveling won with a 5-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 12 ounces. The year before that, Lucas Matzke and Dan Cochran put up 24 pounds, 4 ounces. Given the tournament’s timing and the health of the fishery, I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone break the 25-pound barrier this time around.”

Baker noted that a variety of presentations will likely hold water on Mille Lacs, allowing Cabela’s NABC anglers to fish their favorite tactics. “Football jigs tipped with plastic grub bodies have been top producers the last couple of seasons here,” he said. “But depending on the conditions and mood of the bass, everything from drop-shot rigs, jerkbaits, cranks, hair jigs and topwaters could win the day.”

Along with great fishing and exciting competition in a professionally run setting, the Cabela’s NABC’s proven format rewards anglers with lucrative payouts that include a GUARANTEED first-place prize of $10,000 for any event with 50 teams or more. Plus, the NABC Big Bass Pot, Option Pot and sponsor contingencies including Ranger Cup, Garmin Grand Giveaway and T-H Marine Atlas Awards add thousands more to the total. For example, Michael Walters and Luke Ronnestrand pocketed more than $10,000 in winnings at the recent Sturgeon Bay Cabela’s NABC season opener.

As a bonus to anglers who fish multiple NABC events, at the conclusion of the 2018 season the NABC Team of the Year will be awarded a minimum $10,000 prize package, including the opportunity to advance to the 2019 National Bass Anglers Association National Championship on Table Rock Lake, to compete for thousands in cash and prizes, including a new Ranger Boat! The second- and third-place NABC teams from the season’s points standings will also be awarded prize packages and opportunities to compete in the NBAA championship.

Based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the Cabela’s NABC is open to two-person teams from all walks of life, regardless of club or sponsor affiliation. Entry fees are $500 per regular season tournament. Along with an overall payback to anglers well in excess of 100 percent, a small donation is included in each entry fee and matched by the NABC and other conservation organizations up to 3-to-1 in support of bass conservation projects anywhere the NABC does business.

The 2018 Cabela’s NABC season includes five events on a mix of the Midwest’s finest largemouth and smallmouth bass destinations. Registration for the Mille Lacs tournament closes Monday, June 11 at 4 p.m.
