Wood, Whiting Win Cabela’s NABC Mille Lacs Qualifier

Presented by Garmin

For Immediate Release –

Isle, Minn.—July 11, 2015—Minnesota’s Brian Wood and Nathan Whiting broke the 20-pound barrier to top the 46-team field battling for top honors at the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s regular season qualifier presented by Garmin on Minnesota’s mighty Mille Lacs Lake July 11.

“This is pretty awesome, especially with the caliber of anglers in this tournament,” Wood, of Golden Valley, said seconds after stepping off the stage in front of an enthusiastic weigh-in crowd gathered at Mac’s Twin Bay. He and Whiting, of Forest Lake, collected the first-place check of $6,400 plus a pair of $200 Cabela’s gift cards for their efforts. They added $820 from the big-fish pot to their total for tying for big bass of the event with a 5-pound, 4-ounce beauty.

“I actually didn’t think we were going to win,” added Whiting. “I thought we had about 18 pounds and would finish somewhere in the top 10.” As it turned out, their five-smallmouth limit pushed the scale to an impressive 20 pounds, 9 ounces. They were the only team to top 20 pounds, although all teams in the top 10 brought in 17-pound baskets.

Wood and Whiting said their winning pattern consisted of drop-shotting home-poured 4-inch worms around isolated main-lake boulders lying in eight to 10 feet of water. “We started out slow and broke off a lot of fish, but as it turned out it didn’t matter,” Wood said.

Rounding out the top five teams were:
2nd: Andy Young and Dave Larson, 19-06, $3,200 cash plus two $100 Cabela’s gift cards
3rd: Jack Gavin and Eric Klaers, 18-14, $1,800 cash plus two $50 Cabela’s gift cards
4th (tie): Ryan and Corey Brant, 18-13, $1,150 cash plus a $50 Cabela’s gift card
4th (tie): Aaron Daeges and Brian Bengtson, 18-13, $1,150 cash plus a $50 Cabela’s gift card

In all, the Cabela’s NABC awarded a total payout of $20,590 in cash and prizes.

Overall, teams enjoyed great fishing as 171 bass weighing a total of 542 pounds, 11 ounces crossed the stage in the Circuit’s catch-and-release format.

This was the third of four NABC regular-season qualifiers of 2015. The final qualifier is set for another world-class Gopher State bass destination—Lake Vermillion—August 15. The NABC Championship runs Sept. 19-20 on Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka.

Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, is in its fifth season as title sponsor of the NABC. Other sponsors include: Ranger Boats, Stratos Boats, Mercury Marine, Garmin, MotorGuide, G-Juice and T-H Marine.

Based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the Cabela’s NABC is open to two-person teams regardless of club or sponsor affiliation.
