Presented by Cabela’s
Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.—May 13, 2018—Michael Walters and Luke Ronnestrand’s multi-pronged plan of attack propelled them to victory at the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s 2018 season opener May 12 on Lake Michigan’s legendary Sturgeon Bay.
The pair sacked a 5-bass limit weighing a whopping 28 pounds, 5 ounces to top the leaderboard and pocket more than $10,000 in winnings, including the $6,700 first-place cash payout, $2,568 in cash from the option pot, and $1,000 Ranger Cup contingency.
Presented by Cabela’s and based at scenic Wave Pointe Marina and Resort on Little Sturgeon Bay, WI. the event pitted 37 top two-person bass fishing teams from 9 states against one another in an all-out battle for bassin’ bragging rights and a share of the NABC’s lucrative payout.
“This is great,” said Walters, of Maple Grove, MN., “With conditions changing every day, it was challenging to be consistent.” Ronnestrand, of Elk River, MN., was likewise elated. “It feels really good to come out on top on this amazing fishery against some of the best bass anglers in the nation,” he said.
Walters and Ronnestrand fished a mixed bag of tactics. They started out casting jerkbaits to bass over sand flats in 7 to 10 feet of water early in the day, then threw tubes and grubs into the warmest shallows they could find in the afternoon.
Rounding out the top five teams were:
2nd: George Eastman, Marinette, WI. and Brian Caine, Wausaukee, WI. 28-02, $3,250 cash
3rd: Curtis Anderson, Victoria, MN. and Mark Linduski, Excelsoir, MN. 27-13, $1,900 cash plus another $1,700 from the option pot
4th: Shane and Mason Raveling, Jordon, MN. 27-01, $1,200 cash
5th: Matt Peters, Waconia, MN. and Justin Faulk, Raleigh, NC. 26-13, $1,000 cash
In all, the Cabela’s NABC awarded a total payout of $24,298 in cash and prizes.
A total of 166 bass weighing 639 pounds, 1 ounce crossed the scale at Wave Point Marina and Resort and were returned to the Sturgeon Bay system in the Cabela’s NABC’s catch-and-release format. Big bass was a 7-pound, 11-ounce trophy smallmouth caught by Matt Peters and Justin Faulk.
