For Immediate Release –
La Crosse, Wis.—October 5, 2014—Ben Otto and Casey Gallagher finished strong to score a comeback victory at the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s North Region World Bass Championship Oct. 4-5 on the Mississippi River out of La Crosse, Wis.
“Words can’t describe this feeling,” said Otto. “I’m originally from the La Crosse area, and winning this event in front of family and friends is incredibly special.”
Along with claiming the most coveted crown in team bass fishing, Otto and Gallagher, both of Pulaski, Wis., collected the $12,000 first-place cash prize, plus the $1,000 Ranger Cup contingency and $195 from the Big Bass Pot for catching a 4-pound, 15-ounce smallmouth that was the second-biggest bass of day two. That fish anchored an impressive 23-pound, 5-bass limit that propelled them from fourth place on day one into the winners’ circle.
On day one, Otto and Gallagher sacked a respectable 17-pound, 6-ounce limit. They raised the bar by nearly six pounds on day two, for a 40-pound, 6-ounce total weight. “We pushed our fish a little harder today,” Gallagher explained after the final weigh-in. He noted that the team mainly fished ½-ounce football jigs tipped with soft-plastic, chunk-style craw trailers, though swimbaits and stickbaits were also key to their program.
Gary Adkins and Kyle Carpenter, both of Green Bay, Wis., finished a close second with 38 pounds, 15 ounces, worth a cool $6,000 in cash from the payout plus another $325 for their 5-pound, 8-ounce smallmouth that was big bass on day two.
Rounding out the top five were:
3rd: Joseph Hall and Aaron Larocque, 37-07, $3,000
4th: John Newland and Jason Sosebee, 34-15, $2,000
5th: Ron Twardowski and Chris Fredrick, 30-09, $1,500
Jim Barczak and Mike Mayan claimed the $200 Optima True Blue bonus. In all, the Cabela’s NABC awarded $37,070 in cash and prizes at the event.
The Championship featured the top two-person teams from the Cabela’s NABC North Region’s 2014 tournament trail, which included qualifiers at Sturgeon Bay and Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, and Minnesota’s Leech and Vermilion lakes.
A total of 244 bass weighing 684 pounds, 2 ounces crossed the stage at the West Copeland Boat Launch. All were returned to the river in the Circuit’s catch-and-release format. Adding to the fun, the Cabela’s NABC and National Professional Anglers Association presented a Youth and Family Fishing Clinic following the day one weigh-in. Youths received free rods and reels courtesy of the NPAA.
Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, concludes its fourth year as title sponsor of the NABC. Other sponsors include: Ranger Boats, Stratos Boats, Mercury Marine, MotorGuide, Optima Batteries, G-Juice and Sea Grant.
Based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the Cabela’s NABC is open to two-person teams regardless of club or sponsor affiliation. Entry fees are $500 per regular season tournament and $600 for each two-day region championship. The Circuit offered more than 100 percent payback to anglers in 2014. In addition, a small donation is included in each entry fee and matched by NABC and other conservation organizations up to 3-to-1 in support bass conservation projects anywhere the NABC does business.
