Isle, Minn.—August 13, 2016—Minnesotans Lucas Matzke and Dan Cochran weighed in a 5-fish limit weighing a whopping 24 pounds, 4 ounces to win the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s final 2016 regular season team tournament presented by Stratos Boats on Mille Lacs Lake August 13.
“This is still sinking in,” an ecstatic Cochran, of Plymouth, said moments after topping the field of 92 anglers, who had traveled from as far away as California and Ohio to compete on the big lake’s legendary smallmouth fishery. “Lucas and I have fished club events but nothing like this before. It was quite a rush to fish with such good sticks and give them a run for it.”
“It was exciting to compete against such incredible anglers, including guys like Al Lindner, who taught me to fish,” added Matzke, of Lino Lakes. “Standing in the weigh-in line was a little nerve-wracking because we knew we had a good bag, but it turned out great in the end.”
Matzke and Cochran said they slowly dragged ½-ounce football heads tipped with twin-tail grubs over rocky bottoms in 20 feet of water on the north and northwest sides of the lake. “Mimicking crayfish was key,” said Cochran, who explained that they fished jigs with orange or red in them, while brown or green grubs graced with a touch of red worked best.
The winners pocketed $7,180 for their efforts, including $6,600 in first-place cash, plus a pair of $100 Cabela’s gift cards and $380 for taking third place in the Big Bass Pot with a 5-pound, 9-ounce beauty.
Rounding out the top five were:
2nd: Scott Bonnema and Bob Spriegl, 23-03, $3,200 cash, plus $200 in Cabela’s gift cards
3rd: Dean Capra and Jeremiah Johnson, 23-02, $1,800 cash plus $100 in Cabela’s gift cards and $950 from the Big Bass Pot
4th: Adam Rasmussen and Ben Antoniewicz, 22-09, $1,400 cash
5th: Shaun Kruzitski and Jason Corrao, 22-07, $1,000 cash
In all, the Cabela’s NABC awarded a total payout of $17,000 in cash and prizes. A total of 153 bass weighing 573 pounds, 12 ounces crossed the scale at scenic Mac’s Twin Bay and were returned to Mille Lacs Lake in the Cabela’s NABC’s catch-and-release format. Big bass of the day was a 5-pound, 15-ouncer caught by Dean Capra and Jeremiah Johnson.
This was the last of four 2016 Cabela’s NABC regular-season qualifiers. The Cabela’s NABC Championship is set for October 1-2 at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
