Walker, Minn.—July 26, 2014—Minnesotans Mike Lien and Willy Wicks broke the 20-pound barrier to win the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s North Region tournament on mighty Leech Lake July 26 out of scenic Horseshoe Bay Lodge.

“It’s great to get the monkey off our backs,” said an elated Lien, of Park Rapids, who explained that he and Wicks have had brushes with victory but never closed the deal. “We’ve been so close, so many times, winning this one is awesome.”

He explained they leaned on a few key spots to put together the winning basket. They focused on rice and reeds in 4 to 5 feet of water, throwing Northland Tackle Jaw Breaker Spoons and ¾-ounce jigs tipped with Berkley PowerBait and Havoc craw trailers.

In second place with 18 pounds, 7 ounces, fellow Minnesotans Connor Summers, of Nevis, and James Eischens, of Park Rapids, pocketed $3,000 in cash, two $200 Cabela’s gift cards and $1,075 in cash from the Big Bass Pot for catching a 5-pound, 5-ounce largemouth that was big fish of the event.

Third-place finishers Mike Johnson and Benjamin Cumber, both of Park Rapids, weighed in 17 pounds, 13 ounces, worth $1,700 in cash and two $100 Cabela’s gift cards. Wisconsinites Jim Barczak, of Osceola, and Mike Mayan, of Rosendale, collected the $200 Optima True Blue contingency in fifth place. In all, the top teams shared $20,940 in cash and prizes.

The catch-and-release event offered one day of competition on the bass-rich system, with a backup day in case of bad weather. The weigh-in was held at Horseshoe Bay Lodge. Teams brought a total of 30 limits to the stage as Leech Lake yielded 184 bass weighing a total of 562 pounds, 6 ounces.

This was the third of four NABC North Region qualifiers of 2014. The regular-season schedule concludes on Lake Vermillion, Minnesota, August 22-23 (two-day bonus event). The North Region Championship is set for Oct. 4-5 on the Mississippi River at La Crosse, Wisconsin. The Southeast Region Championship will be held on Lake Lanier, Georgia, Aug. 9-10.
